Shanghai Grand Theatre

Shanghai Grand Theatre

A dynamic architectural statement combining both Eastern and Western aesthetics and influences, the Shanghai Grand Theatre is located in the center of Shanghai across from the People’s Square and provides a highly visible cultural icon for China’s financial capital.

Auerbach Pollock Friedlander participated in the execution of the competition-winning design of the celebrated architect Jean-Marie Charpentier. The firm provided theatre consulting services for the 1,800-seat Lyric Opera Theatre, including the development of the seating plan to provide superior sightlines, audience accommodation and the integration of critical theatrical functions within the design of the interior space. Three tiers of audience seating include the lower level stalls and parterre, together with two levels of balconies and a series of side boxes and galleries animating the side walls of the audience chamber; while five levels of lobbies service the audience, including VIP areas and entry foyers.

The integration of a variable acoustics system and a moveable orchestra enclosure was a critical part of the firm’s contribution to the project, allowing the building to support a wide range of performances including touring opera, symphony, ballet and musicals. The focus on accommodation of Western touring performances supports a major part of a cultural exchange program for China.
