Emerson College - Cutler Majestic Theatre

Emerson College acquired the Majestic Theatre in 1983 after the 1903 theatre had been abandoned for many years. With work on the neighboring Tufte Center underway, Emerson College asked the design team of Apeiro Design (formerly Auerbach Pollock Friedlander) and Elkus Manfredi Architects to move take on the renovation of the Majestic.

The main floor of the auditorium was reconfigured to improve the audience experience. The entry aisles were moved to the sides to allow a steeper rake at the back of the auditorium for better sightlines and a cross aisle was added for improved access. Sound and light locks were added to the main orchestra level to eliminate distractions from the main lobby and street.

The usable stage area was expanded, existing rigging was re-spaced and 13 new linesets were added.

The front edge of the stage and the opening to the orchestra pit were reshaped and a new orchestra pit platforming system was designed to allow installation and removal in half the time that was required for the previous system.

The entire interior paint finish was painstakingly restored by Evergreene Arts.
