NEW YORK, NY; SAN FRANCISCO, CA; AND MINNEAPOLIS, MN Paul Garrity, Principal of AUERBACH POLLOCK FRIEDLANDER, Performing Arts/Media Facilities Planning and Design, has been named Sound Designer of the Year at the 2004 Entertainment Technology Show by the Lighting Design Institute (LDI). The organization recognized Mr. Garrity “for his work in supporting and enhancing the field of sound design, as well as for his work on Cirque du Soleil's ZUMANITY™ theatre that has a unique and adjustable sound environment.” This year’s award is of particular significance since Mr. Garrity is the first designer to receive the award for sound systems design, rather than for the sound design of a particular production or show. “It was a wonderful surprise when they called my name at the ceremony,” said Mr. Garrity, “The award is a great honor, one that I share with the entire APF sound design team. Our work on Zumanity and with Cirque du Soleil’s production sound designer, Jonathan Deans, was particularly rewarding as it allowed us to deploy all our design resources in a single project.”
According to the firm’s founder, S. Leonard Auerbach, “Paul stands out amongst our talented staff as the perfection of calm in a sea of high energy creativity, totally focused and leading the world of sound design to new places, solving the most complex problems with very achievable solutions. Our clients are constantly thrilled with his work.”
Mr. Garrity has more than twenty-five years of international consulting experience. The range of his projects at AUERBACH POLLOCK FRIEDLANDER spans from modest sound systems for community college theatres to multi million dollar sound and communication systems. Mr. Garrity has designed and/or engineered systems for theatres, concert halls, sports arenas, industrial plants, churches, military facilities, luxury hotels and casino/hotel showrooms. He is based in the firm’s New York office. Mr. Garrity is currently serving as a guest lecturer on sound design at the Yale School of Drama.
Steven Friedlander, Principal-in-Charge of the office, said, “In 18 years of working with Paul, he has always epitomized the collaborative work ethic that we strive to maintain. He is a dedicated, caring, professional who brings his intelligence and resourcefulness to every project on which he works.”
