VIVA ELVIS™ BY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL®

Lobby

The idea of Elvis’ colorful and dramatic life are reflected in the lobby design of Viva ELVIS™ by Cirque du Soleil® with a curving glass ceiling internally illuminated by over 6,000 red/blue/green color changing LEDs.  The ceiling changes color throughout the day becoming more frequent and vivid as show time approaches.  An hour before the show, the ceiling is ablaze with vibrant shifting color.  The ceiling is a beacon of color which catches the patrons’ attention upon approach and immerses them in colored light as they enter the lobby.

The glass ceiling of the entry lobby opens to the soaring 44 foot high ceiling of the inner lobby.  Twelve feet above the entries to the theatre span a 24’ high by 150’ long glass wall internally illuminated by 357 red/blue/green LED fixtures comprised of 5,355 LEDs.  The glass wall, referred to as the “Diamond Wall”, is comprised of lenticular lenses behind fluted vertical glass panels.  The lenticular lenses recall tear drop forms that move in juxtaposed images with the angle of view.  The lighting effect of color and movement behind the lenses is a dynamic focal point in the lobby.  Mirrors line the opposite wall reflecting the images created in the glass wall.  Color changing is synchronized with the glass ceiling of the entry lobby, additionally the wall lighting creates patterns of light that chase, wipe, and spiral.  Just before the doors open to the theatre the wall lighting is an explosion of color and pattern representing Elvis at his most lavish.  Controlled by a theatrical lighting control console the lobby ceiling and wall required many days of programming.

Retail Box Office and Concessions
Anchoring the lobby on either side of the glass ceiling are the box office and retail areas.  Beyond the retail is the concession area.  The areas flanking the colored ceiling are tied together by a similar ceiling design and lighting approach.  Domed ceiling elements serve as an anchor to each end of the color changing soffit.  The ceilings in the box office and entry to the retail are inverted domed grids in-filled with back lit webs of diffused white resin.  Recessed MR16 downlights light the perimeter of the store.  Curving single rail light track winds below the ceiling providing display lighting for the merchandise and recalling the serpentine curved wall displays.  Decorative pendant fixtures distinguish the points of sale.

At the concession area the translucent panels at the front of the bar internally glow with LEDs framing the perimeter of each panel.  Decorative glass pendant fixtures delineate the bar.  A woven metal ceiling is punctuated with glass rimmed MR16 downlights providing sparkle and warmth throughout the space.

Audience Chamber
Blending architectural and theatrical lighting techniques, the audience chamber transforms from an elegant, subdued theatrical venue to a pulsing, exciting Las Vegas showroom through the use of light and color.  As the audience arrives, theatrical ellipsoidals with circle pattern templates provide general illumination for the audience chamber, bathing the audience in a soft patterned light.  Downlights mounted between the architectural ceiling panels supplement the pattern lighting without washing out the pattern effect.  Pathway illumination is provided by low level LED and fluorescent aisle lighting.

Color-changing, high-intensity LED fixtures are incorporated into architectural side wall openings lighting luxurious drapery.  Before show time the side wall lighting is restrained and complements the rest of the architecture.  As the show starts, the side walls burst into color, surrounding the audience with pulsing color changes and drawing them into the show that is about to begin.  The color changing walls are a significant feature in the introduction of the show and slowly sequence to more static moods at other times.
