IT'S LIGHTS AGAIN FOR THE OPERA HOUSE
The main chandelier of the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, dark since renovation began on the House some 18 months ago, was raised and relit recently after being cleaned of 65 years of accumulated grime. The refurbished Opera House will officially open its 75th season for a sold-out concert on September 5th. Restoration of the auditorium chandelier was overseen by Auerbach + Glasow, the architectural lighting design division of Auerbach + Associates of San Francisco, under the auspices of CROH, The Committee to Restore the Opera House. Scott Architectural Lighting/Taylor Stokes of Sausalito was in charge of fabrication and installation. The refurbished six-tier chandelier, some 25 feet in diameter and 14 feet tall, has an electrical load of 66,580 watts, which will restore lighting levels to or slightly above the levels found in the auditorium when the House first opened in 1932. The main chandelier will be much brighter than it was just before the House was closed because of the cleaning and restoration of the uplights at the top, which had been removed sometime in the past. The photo series shows the lower 3 tiers called the finialbeing raised, workmen inside the chandelier relamping its perimeter, the final nearing the top, and the first lighting of the fully refurbished chandelier. |
