Temple Emanu-El
San Francisco, California

This historic worship space, completed in 1926, is a grand example of Byzantine revival architecture. The marble columns and travertine lower walls, bronze and steel custom chandeliers, and gilt bronze and cloisonne enamel Ark of the Covenant reside within a great unadorned dome supported by massive roman arches and vaults. Architectural details and the volume of the space were carefully revealed through lighting improvements without being apparent to the congregation. This project was awarded the Edwin F. Guth Award of Excellence by IESNA.

Theatre consulting by Auerbach Pollock Friedlander.
