STEVE POLLOCK, ASTC
As a partner and theatre design principal in Auerbach Pollock Friedlander’s San Francisco office, Steve Pollock plays a leading role in feasibility, programming and planning studies, as well as primary facility design. He has worked on cultural needs assessments and master plans for Broward County, Florida, the Tri-Cities, Tennessee and for municipalities including Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose. Mr. Pollock has also collaborated in the design of new and renovated projects of over 250 venues including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; the Santa Fe Opera; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the 21,000-seat Conference Center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; the New Orleans Convention Center; the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center; Universal Studios and House of Blues Concerts. His projects for academic institutions include facilities for Denver University, Idaho State University, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern California and numerous University of California campuses. In all cases, his project work regularly encourages close and ongoing client involvement with non-profit organizations, public agencies, academic institutions and producers of entertainment attractions.
Two of his most current projects the Mesa Arts Center and the 450-seat Congressional Auditorium, a media-driven venue for joint sessions of Congress and screenings for the Library of Congress at the US Capitol reflect the broad range of facilities that are part of our theatre consulting practice.
Before coming to Auerbach + Associates in 1985, Mr. Pollock worked as a theatrical lighting designer, listing Off-Broadway and regional theatre credits at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Yale Repertory Theatre and the Virginia Stage Company, among others. He was production manager and technical director for the New York City Opera's tour of "Barber of Seville" and for Abe Feder's, "Dialogues with Light" produced by Interior Design Magazine. He was also technical director and lighting designer for Edward Albee's international tour "Albee Directs Albee." Beyond traditional theatre, Mr. Pollock designed lighting for industrials and theme parks such as Hersheypark, the Paris Air Show and the Chicago Merchandise Mart's Neocon show.
Mr. Pollock has been on the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the University of Michigan, where he supervised the M.F.A. program in Lighting and Sound Design for the Theatre. He served as architecture editor for TD&T and was on the editorial staff of TCI magazine for over 10 years. His work has been published in periodicals as diverse as Auditoria, Contract Design, Lighting Dimensions, and Rhode Island History. Mr. Pollock received his B.A. from Brown University and his M.F.A. in Theatre Design & Technology from the Yale School of Drama.
